Submitted by Kevin Negin on Thu, 03/05/2009 - 12:44After years of negotiation, agreement and final installation of the National Do Not Call List (DNCL) under Bell Canada's assiduous watch, Canadians finally have the opportunity to exercise their consumer right of isolation from the barrage of telemarketing.
Reflecting On a Degree in International Development and Globalization
Submitted by Edward Tubb on Thu, 03/05/2009 - 02:06If I were to examine myself as I would a stranger, I would have to say that I have every possible advantage of birth I could ask for. If I consider my sex, sexual orientation, language, race, religion and ostensive wealth, I find that I have no essential disadvantages.
I am a WASP, and I am male. I am a majority, and I was born in the right place. Therefore, I am privileged.
Confronting Shallow Student Activism
Submitted by Derek Tubman on Thu, 03/05/2009 - 02:06If you have a University of Ottawa e-mail account, you are undoubtedly familiar with Mr. Marc Kelly’s issues. Admittedly, like any good political science student craving their weekly fix of schadenfreude, I attended Mr. Kelly’s most recent talk at McDonald Hall at the University of Ottawa, hoping to see someone get arrested. But I must admit, the performance was eye-opening.

Do we Like Mike?
Submitted by Meagan Kinsella on Thu, 03/05/2009 - 02:03At a Christmas party one cold and snowy Wednesday night, I sat no more than fifty feet from a man who could become Canada’s next Prime Minister. Michael Ignatieff – a professor, a world-renowned journalist, a human rights advocate, and the new interim leader of the Liberal Party – was speaking to his Caucus and Liberal staff.
The Three Sisters of Canadian Conservatism
Submitted by Aaron Hunt on Thu, 03/05/2009 - 02:03Conservatives in Canada have long faced a complicated task – how it is possible to put forward a right wing vision in such a diverse, geographically expansive country. The Three Sisters strategy, as envisioned by University of Calgary political scientist Tom Flanagan, has been instrumental to the two successive minority governments under Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
The Threat of Freshwater Depletion
Submitted by Kevin Verberne on Thu, 03/05/2009 - 02:02The surface of the Earth is just over 70% covered with water. Approximately 97.3% of that is seawater, 2.14% is frozen in glaciers and permafrost, and the rest is freshwater, found in the earth’s lakes, rivers, streams and most significantly in groundwater. This freshwater is that which is used by humans for any number of purposes, including drinking, washing and cleaning, agr
The Rise of the Capos: Narcotraffic Cartels in México
Submitted by Daniel Palazuelos on Thu, 03/05/2009 - 02:02Over time, Mexico’s narcotraffic cartels have become so powerful that they pose a significant threat to national security. They have been able to do this by hiring paramilitary groups and corrupting public security forces. Some believe that this threat is so serious that, if not addressed, it could mean the collapse of the Mexican state.
The Cost of Keeping Traditions
Submitted by Jordan Munro on Thu, 03/05/2009 - 02:01January 23 2009, Lagos, Nigeria, a vigilante group arrives at a police station demanding the arrest of a black and white goat for attempted armed robbery. The group explains that while on patrol they witnessed two men attempting to steal a Mazda 323. The group gave pursuit, one robber escaped, and the other, once noticing he was cornered, used black magic to transform himself into a goat!
Assessing Media Reporting on Israel/ Palestine
Submitted by Jordan Birenbaum on Thu, 03/05/2009 - 01:59One strong and consistent complaint by Israelis and their supporters internationally is that Israel is subject to unfair and biased coverage by the international media. Israelis and their supporters argue that this unfair and biased coverage is systemic and pervasive (and those in the anti-Israel camp often make the opposite argument). Convincing more neutral observers of these syst
