A Conflicted Goodbye to the University of Ottawa
Submitted by Edward Tubb on Tue, 04/07/2009 - 18:45As my undergraduate degree nears its end, I find myself reflecting on the University of Ottawa and my time in it. I think a lot about this place, what it is and how it shapes me. I am changed, like most people are, by my four years—give or take—here.
For Car Companies and the SFUO, Stupid is as Stupid Does
Submitted by Kevin Verberne on Tue, 04/07/2009 - 18:52I’m not an economist. I don’t know much about balance sheets, corporate mergers, bankruptcy, or the stock market. I generally glean my economic information from newspapers, magazines, CBC and CNN, which are not always the most reliable sources, I know…. However, they do send the clear message that the world’s economy has gone to crap.
In Defense of Elitism
Submitted by Kyle Degraw on Tue, 04/07/2009 - 18:51The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “elitism” as 1: leadership or rule by an elite; 2: the selectivity of the elite; and 3: consciousness of being or belonging to an elite. Remark that none of the above definitions suggests an inherently negative attribute associated with elitism, nor does the term belong to one specific ideological or partisan camp.
/* 1800-xxx-xxxx & Marc Kelly */
Submitted by Kevin Negin on Thu, 03/05/2009 - 12:44After years of negotiation, agreement and final installation of the National Do Not Call List (DNCL) under Bell Canada's assiduous watch, Canadians finally have the opportunity to exercise their consumer right of isolation from the barrage of telemarketing.
Confronting Shallow Student Activism
Submitted by Derek Tubman on Thu, 03/05/2009 - 02:06If you have a University of Ottawa e-mail account, you are undoubtedly familiar with Mr. Marc Kelly’s issues. Admittedly, like any good political science student craving their weekly fix of schadenfreude, I attended Mr. Kelly’s most recent talk at McDonald Hall at the University of Ottawa, hoping to see someone get arrested. But I must admit, the performance was eye-opening.
Plato as the post-1960s student: Rancourt’s only chance?
Submitted by Denis G. Rancourt on Thu, 03/05/2009 - 01:56My case—which is best documented at http://academicfreedom.ca leaves few conscious students indifferent. Students either vehemently want me to go away or care about my case and side with me against the administration.
Microeconomics for First Years
Submitted by Betsy Leimbigler on Sun, 01/25/2009 - 23:32The Experiential Learning Service (ELS) at the University of Ottawa offers a variety of volunteer opportunities, some of which allow students to opt out of writing a paper in order to develop a more practical skills set.
Hug it Out
Submitted by Derek Tubman on Sun, 01/25/2009 - 23:25Equality is a funny thing… well, not as an abstract idea, but rather how people view it and how these views are often conflictual and even hypocritical.
Dear President Rock
Submitted by Edward Tubb on Sun, 01/25/2009 - 23:21I write you out of concern for the state of our relationship. We have not hit it off the way I had expected we would when I first learned of your presidency last summer. Knowing your reputation, I anticipated your presidency with cautious optimism. But, in light of our first semester together, we may have to postpone our honeymoon.
That’s How White Boys Get it Done
Submitted by Meagan Kinsella on Tue, 10/21/2008 - 03:12Imagine the following: you are out on a typical Friday night having a blast with some of your closest friends at the local bar. Well, I thought it was typical, anyway. I was tired at the end of a demanding day, and I decided to head home a little early from the always lively Byward Market. All I could think of was catching up on some much-needed sleep, and I continued up Waller to the Laurier bus stop.
What I though should have been the end was just the beginning of my night a few weeks ago this past September.
